Antoinette’s world turned upside down just 24 hours after celebrating her 57th birthday. She woke up during the night with a strange feeling and knew something wasn’t right. Unable to walk or move, Antoinette’s husband rushed her to the hospital. Upon her arrival, it was determined she experienced a stroke. Shocked and confused, Antoinette was determined to get her independence back.
After spending a few weeks at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, Antoinette began rehab at St. James Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. She was greeted by each department to assist with her individual needs.
Before the stroke, Antoinette devoted her time to helping children with special needs. She is married to her husband Richard and has four dogs, one cat, and one bird. With her motivation and support from the staff at St. James Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, she was enthusiastic to have a speedy recovery.
Her goal upon admission was to walk and gain her independence back. Physical therapy and Occupational therapy assessed Antoinette and created a treatment plan for her. She had impairments with balance, fine motor coordination, strength, and mobility. Antoinette went to physical and occupational therapy 5 times a week. Some of the treatments were therapeutic exercises, neuromuscular therapy, gait training therapy, and self-care management training.
Antoinette was able to enjoy music and other activities the Recreation Therapy department provided. Our Director of Concierge visited Antoinette near the discharge date and Antoinette shared, “I owe everything to them. They are caring people who want to help you. Everyone here was nice. Especially Eddie from recreation, Terry from physical therapy, Cathy from occupational therapy, Matina from social work and the concierge Arielle. I would recommend St. James to a family member or a friend.”
